Trusty side-kick Pat and me made a
recent ATV trip to the Afton Canyon about ten miles west of the
ranch. It was an easy ride but just about any terrain is an
easy ride on these four-wheelers.
Afton canyon is one of the most unique areas of
the Mojave Desert with its shear walls and one of the few places
where the Mojave River surfaces (95% of the river runs underground).

We came across many interesting sites
including an abandon mining operation. The picture above shows
what looks to be an old rail spur high on a cliff. That had to
be a dangerous occupation back then.
