A Visit To The Bagdad Cafe |
There is a little known yet famous
restaurant in the Mojave Desert called the Bagdad Cafe.
The cafe is famous for two reasons.
First, it's on historic
Route 66
and second, it is where one of the best movies set in the Mojave
Desert,
Bagdad Cafe, was filmed.
The movie was released 20 years ago and stars
the late Jack
Palance. It's a fictitious comedy about a quirky group of
people living around this small restaurant. It won several
cinematic awards and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music,
Original Song, "Calling
You."

The restaurant and its surroundings look
almost identical to that depicted in the movie which is rare for
Hollywood. And you get a surreal feeling standing on the quiet
yesteryear Route 66 with its busy 40 freeway replacement just a few
hundred yards behind, just like in the movie.
The Bagdad Cafe is one of the furthest notable
landmarks from the ranch at 36 miles and well worth a trip. It
takes almost two hours in a high clearance 4x4 vehicle and just over
an hour on ranch ATV's. The
last two miles are on public roads where ATV's are not allowed.
But it's been noted that what little law enforcement there is out
there tends to be lenient.
No Website Update Next Week

Ranch Side-Kick Pat
(a.k.a. Patrick Star) and I will be on a three day reconnaissance
mission at the ranch to provide new news and photos for the website.
We're hoping to decide
on and pre-run the offroad vehicle course for the
BSR to GVR Rally this October.
The next update will
be published Wednesday, March 7.
