John And Pat's Bust Adventure; Part II |
In our attempt to pre-run the course for the
Bacon Strip Ranch to Green Valley Ranch rally in October on
ATV's, we came across a 1.6 million acre road block known as the
Mojave National Preserve.
Look at this God forsaken place. No
wonder this part of the Preserve is called the Devil's Playground.
The abundance of sand chokes off nearly all vegetation. How
appropriate this picture was taken under cloudy skies and relentless
wind.
California is the most populous state in the
Union and yet the Preserve is so restrictive to visitors that it
just as well be the surface of the moon.
Every inch of the picture you see above can
only be accessed via horseback or hiking shoes and either mode of
transportation is impractical.
The high point in the background, Kelso Peak,
is 4764' high and 15 miles from where this picture was taken.
This distance represents only 1/4 the distance to the eastern
border of the Preserve where it meets the California/Nevada border.

Fortunately, there are a few roads
traversing the Preserve that are open to street legal vehicles and
this is one of them. The rally will go on.
But talk about the loneliest road in America.
Nevada claims to hold that title with
highway 50.
Please...there aren't sand dunes covering the road that haven't been
driven over for days. That's a paved road you're looking at.
The Preserve has done a good job of discouraging people from driving
through even though it's legal.
