John And Pat's Bust Adventure; Part III

Bristol Mountains

Oh, those Bristol Mountains...They lie just south of the ranch and provide some of the most beautiful scenery out there.  Starting in the morning when the sun rises above them until into the evening as it shines back upon them, they are always a pleasing sight.  They continuously beckon you to come visit them.

On this trip Pat and I did just that for the first time since the land was purchased 11 years ago.

There is so much to see in these mountains that you won't find on most maps like a natural rock arch, a spring, a mesa, and a tank of some sort.  We didn't have the time to see any of those things because of the hiking required.  Yet, when we came to the limits of our ATV's, we found this watering hole for Bighorn Sheep that wasn't on any of our maps.

This little canyon was the highlight of our trip.  It was the only time in three days that we were protected from the constant wind.  It was pleasantly quiet and the only time we weren't chewing on sand.

In the picture above you can see the ranch area in the background behind Pat.  Those two small hills in the center are the Mesquite Hills.  You can barely make out the dry lake bed just in front of them which serves as the airstrip for the ranch.  The cabins are on the left side of the lake and are too small to see.

We realized later that we weren't supposed to be there.  The Bristol Mountains are not part of the Preserve which is major off limits to ATV's but it's in what's called a "Wilderness Area" and you're not supposed to be there either so we won't be making this trip again even though we tread lightly.  Makes me wonder how they service that watering hole.
