| Water Station |
There can be no other explanation.
Two months ago, observed railroad construction obseved at the Basin
crossing indicated that something major was going on. And something
major I'm sure it turns out to be...for the Union Pacific Railroad.
For Bacon Strip Rancher's it turns out to be nothing of major consequence.
Long lines of dirt hauling trucks have gone away.
Water stations have dried up. Railroad workers are no where to be
seen.
When I first saw signs of progress along the
UP line running east of the Basin crossing I thought the worst.
I was convinced they were paving Crucero Road. It wouldn't be long
before we'd see gang graffiti on Al's Summer House cabin. It was
like a bad Christmas nightmare. T'was the month before openning
weekend at the ranch and visions of city punks danced in my head.

| New Siding? |
But it seems to have turned out okay. The endless
line of dirt hauling trucks seen at the tracks eight weeks ago looks
like they just added a siding to the line. That's another track
parallel to the existing track where trains can pass each other.
That makes sense considering the increased volume of train traffic
moving along this route so close to Los Angeles.
Of course my "siding" theory is speculation.
I still haven't been able to chat with a UP railroad worker to easily
clear things up and get the true story of what's going on out there.
But what if I did talk to a real person
out here? What if they told me this project was nothing more than
replacing old ties or something? That doesn't make for good press.
Conspiracy theory thinking is much more fun out here.
