If you come to the ranch from the 15
freeway you will pass the Basin mine area. That's probably
why this road is there in the first place.
It's a fascinating area that looks like it was
a large mining operation at one time with abandon rail spurs spreading
around the area. Rock walls were built all over the place. Somebody
was pretty serious about this place at one time.
It's difficult to see from the main road that
leads to the Union Pacific railroad tracks. As you approach the
tracks, the abandon mine is off to the right. You will see roads
leading to the area.
There is quite a lot to see here and it's worth
a side trip if in the area. I know nothing of its history as to
the age of the area or what was being mined.
As a friend of mine and I walked around, I felt
like Clint Eastwood would appear at any moment from around some
corner wearing a poncho and holding a .45.
This area is also easily accessible from the
ranch using ATV's which will be available for rent in September.
